Wedding Song
01:49
|
|||
To keep my mind at bay
I think about my wedding day
It hasn't happened yet
There is a big bouquet
We'd hire a big band to play
and dance ourselves to death
We'd have a holiday
from any of our past mistakes
and sleep in a warm bed
I'll find a picture of
me dancing with the one I love

Hindsight
02:57
|
|||
I got carried on the backs of twenty thousand hungry little ants
They took me past the flag of all they took me to the edge of the ocean
Now everyone's got something in there, everyone's got something in their sleeve
But I don't know just kinda though, Oh I don't know just row, row, row
The truth is I don't like to lie, oh no
Let's see how many times I do before I go
And I got carried on the backs of, twenty thousand hungry little men
They carried me past Tripoli where it was warm we ran, ran, ran
Now everyone's got something in there, everyone's got something in their eyes
But we're all green and oh so mean, oh, we're all green on the inside
The truth is I am far behind the times, they tell me
But what's behind if we're ahead, it's happened once, it will happen again
We're friends again

Bearly

You and I were barely strangers
You and I were listening to the sound
I was heading to the battle
You were singing that old war hymn
How could you have let him bite you?
You and I were barely strangers
I was living just to spite you
You and I were so cross for a while
I was higher than the channel
It and I were friendly holding hands
Lapping up my wrist to buy me
in the grass where my head lie me.
I was turning bitter better
underneath those starlight peddler pines
I said it could get no stranger
Give me what you've got I'll leave the rinds
Maybe I should be more gracious
Maybe I should meet more strangers
I will die inside a letter
I will not cry, I'll grow feathers

Whole Country Blues
03:54
|
|||
You knew what to say
Your words were always on a southbound train
I had had my way
I tell you, never had I been so strange
It's been a long time coming
Berries on my lips
Up in the upstate tree top fingertips
Slithering through the air
Blowing up sweet scented smoke rings through my hair
It's been a long time coming
But I learned something
from all my good friends,
from all my bad friends,
from all the ruffians
From on the mountains
I saw the ocean
The sign said, open
Hey, come on right in
They taught me something
Hey, come on right in
and I learned something
Hey, come on right in

Purple and Peach
05:09
|
|||
Sitting in a balcony over coast
Watching as the girls look back and they boast
Singsonging, no way, son, you're toast
Somehow that's what I admire the most
Leaning with the day into a lit night
Watching as the blue confetti tips white
Seeing as it hits the marble and fights
to get to me and who knows, maybe it might
Tripping down the stairs my friends try to find
Our egos going nuts but really who minds
Watching as the horse swallow up kings
Somehow I know they'll be behind me
All of the birds go murder their pray
Exacting a shuttle back from such days
A metaphor to sooth the sorest of bones
like waking from a dream made jealous of home
Purple and peach everywhere.
Cause I've found this world that could swallow us whole
Whether fun or sport or philosophical droll
If it's all so big just compared to one man
Oh I'd give anything just to kiss the kind sand
and with Mahi flounder filling us to the brim
as I tread ever-longing that I couldn't swim
I see species imploded, holding dishes too hot
Think I'll welcome this hulking mass and rot
Cause I've found this world that could swallow us whole
Whether fun or sport or philosophical droll
If it's all so big just compared to one man
Oh I'd give anything just to kiss the kind sand
and with Mahi flounder filling us to the brim
as I tread ever-longing that I could not swim
I see species imploded, holding dishes too hot
Think I'll welcome this hulking mass and rot
Cause there's purple and peach everywhere

Sprout

You were up wearing something black
but your skin was tan
I'm glad you finally got your color back,
lovely
Your spirits high but your voice was hoarse
I'm glad to see the ugly imagery had finally gone and run its course
by the spring
Cause I know that life on trees will make things better
But nothing we know will ever bring it back
I feel the same in some canny way
but it's nostalgia at best
and it's fortunate at any rate
It was on some summer night
You went to Phoenix, Arizona
hoping somebody would steal your life
It's not that easy
Down by the river where the wind'll blow
you'll curl up heavily
and watch the never ending current go
and wash me up
But sometimes I still catch myself a memory
Sometimes they're blue but mostly you were right
The winter cold still chills me
I still love to see the spring
Fortunately, I took the bait
You were fortunate at any rate
You were still fortunate at any rate

The Big One
06:55
|
|||
I am far above anything
that you could use to hurt me like you used to
I am bored
I am lost in thought
I've got something on my chest but I am far too gone to talk
I'll always be your scorn
I'll be right there in you're thoughts
on the front porch watching lightning storms
This has happened before
My salty secrets keep me curled up on the bedroom floor
I am done
I cannot lose myself
In the glory of the living
You are the glory of the living
I am through
I cannot sing or talk
I am lost in the red giants
I just saw a shooting star
You're the pie sitting on a window sill,
the crow eyeing it down
Like the mortician sitting in the kitchen reading dying catalogs
You're the lost letter of a native tongue,
the drug getting sold for love
You're the gone pittance singing good riddance on an age old institution
You're the case spinning of a spiral stair,
the axis where it's spun
Keeping us good old humans on the ground
like we hurt someone
You're the ghost living in the powerlines,
the ancient accident
You're the ghost living in the powerlines
with the best of intentions
I am done
I cannot lose myself
In the glory of the living
We are the glory of the living

I was in danger of becoming plain
So I altered my ego was deeply ashamed
to find separate remainders in varying looks
and so I sold my glasses to buy the books
It's always by the books
We always buy the books
It's always buy the books
We always buy the books
And I needed cash so I went to the store
and I pulled out my gun I said give me some more
and they said, "No candy bars will sooth this heart.
So just give him the green all the tree's green tree's green"
The grass is green
The water's green
Our eyes are green.
I was in danger of becoming plain
So I altered my ego was deeply ashamed
to find separate remainders in varying looks
So I sold my glasses to buy the books
It's always buy the books

Harbor
03:48
|

I was afraid
I took too much
I couldn't save a little lucky duck
Out in the shade
Stuck in a rut
I wasn't brave enough and such and such
and such and such and such
and such things
such things are gone
They're gone forever
I've had ample time to figure out
that if I wasn't I, I'd be never
So I'll attempt to harbor little doubt
I was afraid

Autumn

Everyone knows something I don't know
Everyone knows which way to go
Everyone knows when to say no
or maybe
Everyone's got a cigarette
Some of us just haven't lit em yet
Everyone planned so patiently
I missed a step
But I don't know the history
and I don't want you hearing me
talking about mystery going away
Cause I'm cautious when I near escape
I'm so awful when I hesitate
Saying something bout it being late, lately
And I carry in my company
someone I don't want no one to see
He's always whispering to me something to say
But I got a letter
It said, don't wait long
The postman was shaking
Like a warbler's song
